22. Marriage and the Family:
Marriage was divinely established in Eden and affirmed by Jesus to be a
lifelong union between a man and a woman in loving companionship. For the
Christian a marriage commitment is to God as well as to the spouse, and
should be entered into only between partners who share a common faith.
Mutual love, honor, respect, and responsibility are the fabric of this
relationship, which is to reflect the love, sanctity, closeness, and permanence
of the relationship between Christ and His church. Regarding divorce, Jesus
taught that the person who divorces a spouse, except for fornication, and
marries another, commits adultery. Although some family relationships may
fall short of the ideal, marriage partners who fully commit themselves
to each other in Christ may achieve loving unity through the guidance of
the Spirit and the nurture of the church. God blesses the family and intends
that its members shall assist each other toward complete maturity. Parents
are to bring up their children to love and obey the Lord. By their example
and their words they are to teach them that Christ is a loving disciplinarian,
ever tender and caring, who wants them to become members of His body, the
family of God. Increasing family closeness is one of the earmarks of the
final gospel message.

[GEN 2:18-25]  And the
LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone I will make
him an help meet for him. And out of the ground the LORD God formed every
beast of the field, and every fowl of the air and brought them unto Adam
to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living
creature, that was the name thereof. And Adam gave names to all cattle,
and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field but for Adam
there was not found an help meet for him. And the LORD God caused a deep
sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and
closed up the flesh instead thereof And the rib, which the LORD God had
taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. And Adam
said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be
called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave
his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall
be one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were
not ashamed.
[MAT 19:3-9]  The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery. ~Miracle at Cana
[2CO 6:14]  Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness ~Marriage Like Christ and the
Church
[MAT 5:31-32]  It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery. [MAR 10:11-12]  And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery. [LUK 16:18]  Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery. [1 CO 7:10-11]  And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband: But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife. [EXO 20:12]  Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. ~Family Relationships
[DEU 6:5-9]  And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates. [PRO 22:6]  Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. [MAL 4:5-6]  Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD: And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse. |
